Shetland's Agricultural History
Since Neolithic times, Shetland farmers and crofters have been keeping cattle and sheep. In an environment where there is relatively little land available for arable farming, livestock continues to this day to provide the backbone of the agricultural community in Shetland. The climate, landscape and relative isolation of the Isles have all helped to shape Shetland cattle and sheep into unique breeds with characteristics that have evolved over the centuries to make the best of life in this unique island group.

There has been evolution too amongst those seeking to bring these breeds to the attention of the wider world. SLMG is now at the heart of working to promote those qualities that make Shetland's native breeds so special. Living on islands surrounded by the waters of the Atlantic, Shetland's livestock enjoys animal health guarantees and disease free status unavailable anywhere else in the UK. The herb rich pastures, heather clad hills and seaweed strewn shores lend Shetland meat a texture and taste second to none. And now consumers outside of Shetland can enjoy what Shetland folk have known for generations - the breeds that embody all that is good from Shetland.
